To turn off the main water supply :

Locate the main irrigation shut off valve, typically located near your water meter or hot water heater. Usually marked with an “irrigation supply valve” tag.

Figure 1 shows the valve in the open position, Which the handle is parallel to the pipe. Figure 2 shows the valve in the off position, Which the handle is perpendicular to the pipe.
